Idaho Legislation May Impact Manufacturing Recruitment
Key points about HB 269:
Purpose:
House Bill 269 amends existing law to significantly shorten the lifespan of the Idaho Launch program and its associated funding source, the In-Demand Careers Fund. The fund helps students and adults afford workforce training related to in-demand occupations and can buy approximately 80% of the training up to $8,000. For manufacturing-related jobs that qualify for Launch funding, click here: See this link for the full list: https://nextsteps.idaho.gov/assets/uploads/2023/12/In-Demand-Career-List-Approved-9-13-23-Updated.pdf
Impact:
This could result in the termination of funding for the Idaho Launch program, which provides financial assistance for students pursuing specific in-demand career paths. Occupations like Heavy truck/tractor drivers, assemblers and fabricators, farmers and ranchers, delivery drivers, maintenance technicians, semiconductor processors, operating engineers, welders, industrial mechanics, cabinet makers and much more could impact a manufacturer’s ability to recruit trained workers.
Sunset Date Change:
The bill essentially moves up the previously scheduled sunset date for these programs, causing them to end earlier than originally planned.
Get Involved:
Idaho Manufacturing Alliance has been planning the launch of its Legislative Committee. GaryDee VanOrden, Director of Operation at Spudnik, is the Board-delegated committee chair. The committee is dedicated to providing manufacturers with information and education about legislation that may impact their operations. The IMA legislative committee is a non-partisan, non-lobbying committee of IMA members designed to inform and educate.
